when i see a wikipedia page name this specific i want to hoot and holler like my sport team got a good score

this article is honestly getting me emotional. carl’s starter has been around since at least 1847, and when he died in 2000 nobody in his family wanted to continue nourishing and distributing his historical sourdough starter. as a result, 10 people from a sourdough usenet group started an organization dedicated to nurturing and distributing the sourdough starter. the organization is called the 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter Preservation Society, aka “Carl’s Friends.”

people who market tumblr as a “fandom website” are missing the fact that the fandom tags are essentially unusable because you cannot venture into them without seeing a take so bad you want to throw up

we need to go back to hating tumblr. no more hellsite (affectionate). don’t even think of giving these clowns your money. if i see you with a checkmark next to your name i’m opening fire

*sound of gun cocking* they can be disabled

tumblr’s current business model isn’t profitable and never will be and no amount of scolding from staff blogs or tumblr ad-free pay piggies is gonna fix that. don’t let yourself be guilted into buying merch, badges or ad-free. you’re throwing your money into a bottomless pit while the techbro ghouls running this website laugh about you at their next board meeting while applauding the shmucks coming up with new ideas on how to twitter- or tiktokify the website

“but tumblr needs to make money!!!”

if tumblr really wants its regular user onboard with keeping the website afloat then we should at least demand that they do the bare minimum in keeping the site functional. and right now, they’re not even doing that. every change they’ve made lately has made the website/app worse. i should give my money to tumblr so what—they can make a more intrusive version of tumblr live? remove the chronical dashboard? come up with an even more transphobic way of doing content moderation? yeah, no thanks

well we had a terrible run guys. just absolutely godawful. the worst anyones ever done it. i forgot where i was going with this

for anyone whos dash hasnt updated yet:

the fact that they did this the day AFTER the @wip inbox closes so people cant give feedback until next week……….

(Full disclosure, I haven’t been hit with the update yet and tend to use Tumblr on a fairly large desktop monitor, so the left-hand side has always been a large swathe of unused space.)

Sincerely, and genuinely without malice, I don’t understand why this is bad. It’s more cluttered visually, I understand that, but it’s more user-friendly, especially for people coming from other websites (Twitter, Reddit, Facebook…). I’m curious why people don’t like it?

So, as my own disclosure, I keep everything on the right side hidden, so it was just blank on either side.

A few thoughts about why people might hate it:

  1. It’s change. It’s change with no warning and only some of us being used as guinea pigs without volunteering. There are people who would love to be in the beta. There used to be(?) a toggle box for it! Set a beta group and get actual feedback.
  2. Completely fucked with our muscle memory.
  3. I think this is breaking some things people were able to hide before, and they’re being hit with old and new changes at once.
  4. It’s so blatantly a twitter clone- the user group people wanted the least back on tumblr. And a site people actively (rightfully) have a lot of hate for.
  5. All of the left side is now VERY in your face, were before it was just up top, out of the way. It makes it feel very invasive.
  6. It is a lot on my tablet/laptop screen.
  7. OH GODS THE SIDE BLOG PAGE IT BURNS US

It’s just… so much at once.

Absolute visual overload.

I’m reblogging yours since it’s the most concise and also sums up what everyone else is saying.

I understand now! Thank you. I agree with some of what you’re saying, but I’m waiting to see what it’s like when I get my hands on it.
